Prude Ranch was always the best part of summer. My two sisters Wendy and Kelly began the tradition then I followed in the 70's 80's. Trail rides, bunk houses, and the Sadie Hawkins Dance. I still have the belt buckle I won at the rodeo. I also still remember the Triangle bar chant: Traingle bar triangle bar rah rah rah, three bar three bar ha ha ha, three bar thppppp. Awsome times.

I was in six grade when I visited Prude Ranch on a school field trip. I still remember everything the horseback riding (my horse's name was 13). The scary campfire stories (miss. macy , the cherry cabins ..etc) I really loved it , and I cant wait to go back this year again with my family I am so excited :)

I was one of the campers at Prude Ranch in '62 or '63, and lived in Ft. Davis until about the 8th grade. I used to run around with Chipper and Andy. After reading some of the guest comments, I sadly surmised that John Robert passed away recently. Since my own mother passed away on February 3, 2010, I know the feeling of that loss. My sincerest condolences to the entire Prude Family...Karla Sanford, Casper, WY

I was a freshmen at Sul Ross when I started working in the kitchen at Prude Ranch and 25 years later I am there every June for the Davis Mountains Sports Medicine Clinic. John Robert was always kind to me and I wish only fond memories of him for the family! Dawn Allen, Athletic Trainer

Miss Betty,
My deepest sympathy to the entire Prude family in the loss of John Robert. I first started coming to the ranch in the late 1990's. The first time I stayed with you, I cancelled a reservation I had made in town for that day, after talking to John Robert. He was so impressed that I had cancelled that reservation, to stay at the ranch, he took me to my room personally ! It must have been the winter of 1999, or 2000, after a 6 inch snow fall, I was checking out
the next morning, and was summoned to the Big House for breakfast. John Robert said, "You deserve it. You were the only guest that did not check out when the snow started falling last night." As I recall, he cooked a great breakfast, while I visited with PoPo and one of your sons.
I will never forget him, and the wonderful hospitality of Prude Ranch. God bless you all, till we meet again.

It's ironic that I just happened to open your page- alas, I found that John Robert had passed on to Hweaven. It has been many years since we first came to PR- the first was a biology field trip in 1969 from Howard Payne College (now university). Mr Prude was so kind to my group- even acted like we were old friends. Howard Payne Biology students continued to return to Prude Ranch for many years to learn and study the vegetation and the fauna of the Davis Mts., and the Trans Pecos. What fond memories we have. Thanks for all you did and do.

Condolences to the Prude family on the loss of John Robert. I've been to the Prude Ranch with the Texas Star Party and some other star parties hosted by the ranch continually from 1991 to 2007. John Robert was a good sight after a long drive at the registration desk. His friendly greetings made us all attending feel at home. His stories and his continued welcome was appreciated in the dining hall. Adios and thank you, John Robert.

I was in the last graduating class of 1977 with Tammy. 2 whole people. I was at the school from 75-77 and great to see the website. Much of what the pics show i remember, though i don't remember it ever snowing in those three years. I think of John Robert as being more of a father than my own father was during those years. It was also good to hear from Mary on the guestbook. I do hope to oneday return, I never thought i would, but i do miss the old ranch, Popo, Andy, Chip, Warren, the Wards and Bakers and all the students. James Davenport, Jacksonville, FL

Hi Prude Ranch! I spent one great summer at the Ranch back in 1979 with several of my friends from school. I still get a smile on my face thinking back to my time in the beautiful Davis Mountains.
Thanks to the Prude Family and everyone at Prude Ranch for for all you do and for helping play such a special role in my life as well as many others over the years. I can't wait to have my four sons follow in their old mans shoes! I still have my buckle that I won!!

My high school sweetheart and I had been best friends for a couple of years when we went to the Prude Ranch for our senior spring break trip with our Physics Class. We became much more than friends on that trip! Twenty-three years (and ten children) later, we have the fondest of memories of that old ranch in the beautiful Davis Mountains. Thanks to the Prude Family and Ranch for playing such a special role in my life. Can't wait to bring all those kiddos to see you!

"You youngsters may not believe this, but I was a camper at Prude Ranch at age 7 in 1956. The camp was really crude then, but we had a blast. One of the biggest deals was to go into Pecos on Saturday night to the drive-in theater in the stock trailer, with the stink of cattle poop all over your boots. We were lucky enough to became close friends with the extraordinary Mr. Prude, who I remember as being very old, with a white moustache, and very kind and jolly. Those were halcyon days.

PS to previous entry:
I attended Prude from 1965 to 1978, then came back in 85' to help with the ranch hand program. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to contact the following:
Rick Tryce, James Little, or Emily Kincade. They are the reason I played around the campfire then and a big part of the musician I am today. Kaye (Robinson) Barlow
12/5/2008 |
Hey Kaye Robinson Barlowe! I can't believe I chose today to check the Prude Ranch website, and lo and behold, here's a message from you asking about my whereabouts! So, for you and everyone else out there in "Prude Dude Land" (remember that song we wrote and sang at the campfires? "I like Prude Dudes...because they've got _______"[fill in the blank..."horses" or "John Robert" or whatever]). I am alive and well and living and playing in Raton, in beautiful, northeastern New Mexico. If you want to know what I've been up to, just go to my website at www.tricetunes.com, or email me at rtrice@tricetunes.com. But the short answer is I'm still a performing musician, in addition to being a part time pastor and full time banker, and now actually enjoying grandfatherhood! But the big question is: "WHAT'S THIS ABOUT A REUNION ON JULY 4, 2009????" Give me the scoop.
Love to all my old "Prude Dude" pardners out there, especially from 1968 thru 1976.

We camped with you during the week of July 25th and we had a great time. Our grandchildren rated their stay at the Prude Ranch a 10 and loved the horses and the mountains, and of coarse the much cooler temperatures. There is so much to do in this beautiful part of Texas. Thanks for your warm hospitality. We hope to come again.

I was a camper in the early 90's for eight years! There is no experience that compares to the Prude Ranch experience. I will always remember my days as a camper at Prude Ranch, and hope to send my children there someday. I'm also trying to plan out a visit to the ranch to show my friends where some of my best childhood memories took place! I can still remember some of our great camp songs and the names of the horses that I rode each summer. Do y'all still award belt buckles for the rodeo? Go Commanches!!!

Dear Prude Ranch,
I just saw a 1979 rerun of "The Eyes of Texas" where your ranch was featured. I had to take a look on the internet to see if ya'll were still there. I am happy to see that you are! It is nice to know that there are still families who work together and remember their roots. May you have many more years to come.

We attended the Fort Bliss Family Retreat March 27-29 and I have to tell you, we had a wonderful time. It was by far the best weekend our family has had together in a very long time. Everyone was so nice, the cabin was great and whoever cooked all the food, thanks we all gained ten pounds. I have always wanted to spend a vacation on a ranch and this past weekend fullfilled that dream. I rode Tiny and he was a perfect gentleman, my daughter rode Paleface and gave him an attitude adjustment and the views from horseback will stay with us forever. Thank you for giving us a wonderful family memory.

My name is Mary Sheldon. I was a counsleor at Prude Ranch from 1972 to 1975, when the ranch worked with abused children. I just recently got the information that there was a web site. I am proud to have been part of the ranch and all that it did to help our nations "throw away children." Jonn Robert has and continues to be an insperation to me. I learned a lot through my experinces as a counselor, both personally anb professionally. John Robert spearheaded some amazing programs for these kids. As a Probation Officer, that has spent many years with developing programming for Juveniles and their familes I draw a lot on my experiences at Prude Ranch. I hope that John Robert and Ms. Betty have been applauded for their work and passion. I am retired now, and plan to visti the ranch this summer. Although different, I know the healed soulss of many a child and adult alike will be heard in the winds.

Andrew P. Prude one of the 2nd generation Prudes and he married my grandmother. I have so many wonderful memories of him and my grandmother taking us to camp every summer. I miss him dearly and would love to have my daughter go there one day and come home with the same memories that I still have today. I may not remember who was my "best friend" but I do remember most of my horses names.
I feel priveledged to be a part of the Prude family for the years he was here. Even when Grandpa Andy passed away, they always considered us Family. I am grateful for all of those years.
Good luck for all the years to come....

Just a post script to my previous message...John Robert and Betty Prude are also in my fond memory file for being the parents I didn't have. from David C. Puckett (from 1976 to 1978 Prude Ranch Children's Home).
3/13/2008 |
My name is David Puckett. When I was 12 years old I was sent to Prude Ranch when it was a co-ed home for abused children. We had a trailer there that was converted into a schoolhouse and Mr. Ward was the principal. His wife Mrs. Ward was the English teacher. There was also a wrangler there named Warren. I don't know if anyone else remembers this about Prude Ranch, but Pa Pa Prude, as John G "Big Spurs" Prude was known to us, was an instrumental mentor to me in my formulative years.Sadly he has passed on. The childrens home was later relocated to the old Catholic Retreat on the highway past Blue Mountain and then later to the current location off the road to Apline. I'm saying all this in order to point out that the Prude Family has done a lot more for society than most know.

My sister and I went to Prude Ranch years ago when I was in the 3rd grade and were there for 2 weeks!! I LOVED it and still have very fond memories of our stay! We now want to send our kids for the same adventure. Who knew I could ride a horse and even win a belt buckle in the rodeo?!!!

I was one of the first girl campers in 1956 and have had a love affair with Prude Ranch ever since. Looking forward to having my grand-daughter have the same wonderful experiences I had. They were the happiest memories of my childhood. Minette Velvin Strader

THE NEW WEBSITE IS GREAT. FOR SURE IT BRINGS BACK ALOT OF
MEMORIES. THE LAST TIME FOR ME WAS IN THE EARLY 70'S WITH
THE ROCKPORT GANG. 1970, 1971, 1972. JOHN SPRIGG

Congratulations on the great web site and the snow. You have a better winter 2008 in West Texas than we do in western Sweden. All we have had so far this winter is rain. I envy you. Prude Ranch is a wonderful place any time of the year. I really miss you people, the Davis Mountains and do look forward to another visit.

The new website is great! I'm looking forward to coming back out in June with my family for the Texas Star Party. No better place to be than the Davis Mountains.

Hey yall. Its great to see the new website. We just moved to a new house and while unpacking I came across a summer camp video from Prude Ranch from the year 1994. Those were some of the best memories of my childhood! I've always wanted to go back there and be a counselor. Maybe this summer I'll actually do it! Hope to see you all soon.

Visiting this site brought back so many memories from my time at Prude Ranch. I was just thinking about this horse that was there when I attended about about 8 years ago. It was a mustang shire cross I believe. Black and white paint with a blue eye. Thought I might be able to find some pictures of it. Anyways, the new site is beautiful!

I went to prude ranch twice, when I was in school in Saint James and in Sacred Heart. My children will hopefully get to go in a couple of years. Very good memories. CGS

Viewing your website brought back so many wonderful memories. I attended camp for 2 summers in the mid 80s. I have lots of fond memories of horseback riding, sleeping under the stars and visiting Big Bend. I hope to visit Prude Ranch again someday.
